Warning Signs from the Child

One of the hardest parts of figuring out whether the child is being abused or not is deciphering their behaviors as warning signs.


The signs of sexual abuse aren't always obvious and can differ from child to child. Behavior changes can range from unexplained outbursts, depression, withdrawal, or even obsessive compliancy.





There are two forms of signals.


Physical

- Bruising or swelling near mouth or genital area

- Blood on sheets or undergarments

- Scratches or rope burns

- Bed wetting


Psychological

- Acting out or delinquent behaviors

- Anger outbursts

- Avoidance of certain places

- Fear of previously enjoyed people and places

- Regressive behaviors like thumb sucking

- Age inappropriate sexual talk or behaviors

- Sleep disturbances or nightmares

- Change is hygiene practices like excessive bathing or refusing to bathe at all

- Obsessive behaviors

- Perfectionistic compliancy

- Sadness and withdrawal
